Who runs this site
Eatabout is run by a sole trader. Email: contact@eatabout.co.uk.
The same sole trader also makes ChefsRecords, food safety record software sold to kitchens. Eatabout is a separate service, and whether a business uses ChefsRecords makes no difference to whether or how it appears here.

This site does not set cookies.
Our host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and basic browser information to deliver pages and protect the site from attack. We rely on our legitimate interest in running a secure website. Cloudflare acts for us and may process this information outside the UK, including in the United States, under the UK Extension to the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum if that ever stops applying. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
We do not use any tool to count visitors at the moment. If we add one, we will explain it on this page and give you a free way to turn it off before it starts.
If you email us, we use your email to reply and keep it for 12 months after the matter is closed.
Businesses on this site
What we hold: each business's name, address, postcode, map position, type, Food Standards Agency reference number, food hygiene rating and the date it was given, short facts about what it offers, the kinds of dishes its own menu offers (in our own general words), and its website and booking link, each with the link where we read it and the date we checked it.
Where it comes from: the Food Standards Agency's food hygiene rating open data, and the business's own public website or menu. We read websites with automated tools that respect each site's robots.txt, and we never get around a block or a login.
We use an AI service, Anthropic, to help with this research. We send it only public information about businesses and their websites, and nothing about visitors to this site. It runs on Anthropic's servers, which may be outside the UK. Private research notes are kept only as long as the listing.
Why: to help people find places to eat. Some businesses are run by sole traders, so this can be information about a person. We rely on our legitimate interest in helping people find places to eat, using information the business or the Food Standards Agency has already made public.
Apart from business names, which sometimes include a person's name, we do not publish the names of owners, chefs or staff.
How long: while the business appears in the Food Standards Agency's open data and on our pages. When a business closes or asks to be removed, we remove its listing within 30 days.
We do not contact every business individually to tell them about this, so we publish this notice instead.
If you run a business on this site, you can ask us to correct its listing or remove it: email contact@eatabout.co.uk. Its rating will still appear on the Food Standards Agency's own website.
